One Crew: Celebrating the Heroes of Exmouth’s RNLI Station

The One Crew project is a heartfelt collaboration between myself and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) station in my hometown of Exmouth, Devon. This project was born out of a desire to honour and document the 140 incredible volunteers who dedicate their time—and, in some cases, risk their lives—to ensure the safety of those at sea.

As the RNLI celebrates its bicentenary in 2024, this milestone also highlights Exmouth’s rich history of lifesaving, with lifeboats serving the town since 1805. My vision for One Crew is to create a timeless record of these selfless individuals during this 200th year—an enduring tribute that future generations can look back on to understand the sacrifices made by this extraordinary team.

The Meaning Behind “One Crew”

The theme of One Crew emphasizes a simple yet profound idea: every single person at the station plays a vital role in its lifesaving mission. It’s not just about the courageous men and women who brave the seas; it’s about the entire team who make those rescues possible.

From the mechanics and admin staff to the shopkeepers and tour guides, each volunteer’s contribution is indispensable. Without the collective effort of this dedicated crew, the lifeboat would not be able to launch efficiently when lives depend on it. One Crew is a celebration of this unity and shared purpose—a reminder that lifesaving is a team effort.
